The video is sure funny, and has a great choice of songs for it. (I also like the trippy sail brands montage, as it's fun to look for my favorite logos for that part.) I hope I can get my old boards fixed and ready to sail. This blog helps me get inspired to keep working on it. Hey came across this site looking for a ...FUCK YEH! Hey came across this site looking for a photo with Robbie Naish Windsurfing on a regular house door on the cover of the Windsurfing Magazine. Excellent job in the research department here!... met Robbie in Toronto on the Lake and he taught me flips thru the boom and backwards rail riding. Every 10 years I get back into the sport, ( now 62 ). My oldest student was 92 from Sweden, so there is noe excuse to stop. I was once sent to the Bahamas to test out the prototype of the LASER sail board... got distracted by the lovely european woman at ClubMed to give effective reporting. Saw the incredible change in the sport where competition was fun fun fun to why so serious in the mid 80's. Best friendships ever were made in this sport! Keep on sailing... love Trevor from the WET COAST! Somewhere I read (probably in Wooden Boat Magazine) that the Kennedys, on the East Coast of Florida, sailed a sailboard-type of boat long before it was popular, so I suppose if I can find it that could be added to the top of your list. However, just as we now know it wasn't Christopher Columbus who first discovered America, but rather the Vikings (or was it Saint Brendan), going back as long as boards and sails have been around, the concept was probably tested out this way or that. But certainly Drake and Schweitzer had the drive, creativity, training, intellect to carry it forward - what a beautiful, simple design the original windsurfer is, and has certainly been proven over the years.
Now, one other quibble, with the commenter who called the Windglider "crappy". As someone who actually owned a Windsurfer, but also sailed Windgliders, they were pretty comparable. (I recall the fin was tiny, so that was one flaw.) Sure, the designer of the Windsurfer would call the Windglider a poor choice, but according to the article below, it came down to a question of patents and legal issues with the Windsurfer. Anyway, main point is, Windglider was a perfectly good board. https://books.google.com/books?id=QUfoKBdS3b4C&pg=PA66&lpg=PA66&dq=windglider+vs+windsurfer&source=bl&ots=wrRpCZaE5b&sig=F8G6vEUwD-ZzVJwqkzIHdB7ZSKw&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CEsQ6AEwC2oVChMIjL-N-6L9xwIVwwuSCh0PPw9e#v=onepage&q=windglider%20vs%20windsurfer&f=falsekupcihttp://nytimes.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7458301809937624343.post-61810703302486369012015-09-04T03:24:53.626-04:002015-09-04T03:24:53.626-04:00Excellent summary!Excellent summary!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14260862158364499907noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7458301809937624343.post-80662320605040985862014-04-09T22:51:33.214-04:002014-04-09T22:51:33.214-04:00Wow that's so interesting. I'm so surprised that one of the first places that modern windsurfing gained popularity was Germany of all places! Simply stunned how quick some of the more recent speed records are! Keep up the great workAidannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7458301809937624343.post-2886435241478916842013-12-23T04:48:51.465-05:002013-12-23T04:48:51.465-05:00Hi just found this site. As on...Hi just found this site. Great work, indeed!
As one of the first windsurfers in Germany, let me provide some informations from a slightly insider view perspective.
Dieter Hellwig, Germany, one of the best race boat designers and racer in the sixties and seventies got in 1974 my Ten Cate windsurfer and created on of the first planing boards due to his experiences in outboard race boats. At that time, most windsurfers followed the principles of real boats and competitions had been held on classical regatta courses.
Hellwig invented the rubber joint to provide a torque free conniption between the board and the mast foot.
During a field test from a German surf magazine at the Lake Garda, Peter Brockhaus, Ernstfried Prade and Mr. Ostermann from Windglider directly found out that this 'Diabolo-joint' was much better than their plastic or stainless steel joint with a certain blocked position.
After this tests in Italy, Mr. Prade called Dieter Hellwig to send him some copies in order to test them for the first surfboard from Mistral, the Competition with the black rubber line.
Teh Mistral Competition was a conventional, not planing surfboard but very successful in the market.
A shortened hollow surfboard from Hellwig, the 'BlowUp' very light and due to the cutter tail with a more backwards positioned daggerboard position had been tested by Malte und Karl Simmer made them thinking about planing boards instead of displacement boards.
A short time later the KingCobra was launched by Cobra, Thailand. This was the break threw for longer planing boards worldwide.

OK, let's stop now…….Hang Loose!
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
